Ervin was born in Wilmot Township, Ontario in 1920, to Horace and Irene (Shantz) Hallman along the Myrtle, Roy, George, Orval and Phyliss. In 1941, Ervin enlisted in World War II with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada in Galt, Ontario and was trained as a rifleman. In 1945, the war was over, and Ervin returned to Kitchener and worked at BF Goodrich. Ervin married Olive (Culligan). He was a 25-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Ervin passed away in 1999 and is buried in the Mannheim Mennonite Cemetery, Wilmot Township. His name is inscribed on plaque #6 of Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
