Artist. Born in Slavianka, Ukraine, as a boy, he and his family moved to Moscow where they became involved in the art community. He attended classes at the Moscow school of arts, and in 1896 he traveled to Paris where he spent three years the Julian Academy. In 1899, he returned to Russia to attend the Imperial Academy in Saint Petersburg. He became a founding member of the society of artists know as the Jack of Diamonds group in 1909. They were the leading exponents of avant-garde art in Russia. The group’s first exhibition, held in December 1910 including works of cubism, portraits, and still life efforts, such as Konchalovsky's, that were strongly influenced by Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. He was a prolific painter, having created more than five thousand known works. In the 1930s he altered his style, and turned to what was being called Social Realism, becoming a typical representative of Soviet style art. After his death at 79, his studio was preserved by his son, and in 1996 the idea of creating a Museum Pyotr Konchalovsky was launched. Konchalovsky is one of the most sought Russian artists by collectors. The current auction record for one of his pieces was established in 2007, when the painting "Mallows" (1921), was sold in London for $2.1 million.
