She was born July 5, 1930 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to Frank M. and Lillie I. (Gooch) Mitchell.
Her family came to Oklahoma when the territory was opened for homesteaders.
At age 25 she went to Denver, Colorado and when questioned why, she would respond, to find a husband. On September 4, 1959 she married Ralph D. Collins of Screven, Georgia. He died September 10, 2014
She is survived by two daughters, Valissa “Lisa” (Mike) Zigler of Hagerstown and Wendy (Jeff) Myers of Elkhart; four grandchildren, Joshua (Brooke) Zigler, Jon (Jessica) Zigler, Aaron (Miranda) Zigler and Denise (Jeremiah) Ward;11 great grandchildren and brothers-in-law, Ronnie Groom, Gerry Woodruff and Larry Collins.
The oldest of four children, she was preceded in death by siblings, James Frank Mitchell, Edna Groom and Cynthia Woodruff.
In 1948 she graduated from Guthrie High School and worked as a secretary in Colorado, Georgia, Indiana and retired from Horrace Mann Insurance, California. She and Ralph moved back to Indiana after retirement to be close to family.
Velma was a loving mother, wife and daughter. A Christian, she loved her Lord.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.
Private burial will be in Violett Cemetery.
