Catherine Tobin was born 27 December 1854 in New Haven, Connecticut. As a child she and her family lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She told Father Max Barnett that she recalled being dismissed from school so that she and the other children could go to the train station and bid the soldiers farewell as they left for the Civil War. She was confirmed in the Cathedral in Milwaukee. Her family moved to Cresco, Iowa — just west of Decorah — about 1863.
Her middle name AGNES is recorded in a delayed certificate of birth for son William Nicholas Collins filed in 1956. Her first name is spelled with a C and a K in various family and historical records. C may be correct in that is is used in her obituary, and her daughter and son-in-law presumably were knowledgeable about the correct spelling. The cemetery stone at St. Michael's has her name engraved CATHERINE COLLINS. She married John Joseph COLLINS, son of Michael COLLINS (1826->1900) & Mary HOWARD (1827->1900), in 1879 in Lourdes, Paris Twp, Howard Co., IA. He was born in Ohio on 6 January 1855. He died in McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., SD, on 4 December 1937. Buried in St.Michael Cemetery, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., SD, on 6 December 1937.
