Graduated from Amsterdam (New York) High School in 1940 and from Bucknell University in 1943 (B.S.) and 1949 (M.A.). He went on to do graduate work, in history, at Princeton University.
Veteran -World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps as a platoon leader in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, participating in the Okinawa campaign and the occupation of Japan and China.

Over the years he was an analyst with the National Research Council in Washington, D.C., from 1951 to 1953; a financial manager with Allstate Insurance Co., working successively in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago, until 1969; treasurer of the Adlai Stevenson Institute of International Affairs in Chicago for 3 years. After he and his family relocated to Waterbury Center, Vermont in 1972 he served as a business manager of the Washington West School District. In 1974 he became, in 1974, an analyst with the state of Vermont Department of Budget and Management until he retired in 1984
While living in Waterbury, he was a member of the town Budget Committee from 1975 to 1984 and the Planning Commission from 1984 to 1989. He was a volunteer with the municipal recycling program from 1988 to 1992.
He enjoyed painting and was a part of several solo and group shows. and also was active with the Art Resource Association and served as a volunteer with the T.W. Wood Art Gallery
He relocated to Portland, Oregon in 2008 to be closer to family.
Survived by a son and daughter-in-law and 2 granddaughters
