44th Michigan Governor. He served as the Governor of Michigan from January 22, 1969 to January 1, 1983. He entered Yale University after graduating from high school, but in 1942, interrupted his studies to enlist in the Army Reserve Corps. In early 1943, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps and went on to fly 50 combat missions as a waist-gunner on B-24 bombers during the Second World War. He survived two crash landings and went on to earn seven military honors including the Purple Heart and Air Medal. After the war, he went on to complete his studies at Yale and later served as president of his family's department store business. In 1947, he was appointed to the Michigan Waterways Commission. He later served in the Michigan State Senate from 1961 to 1964. In 1964, he was elected, as a Republican, to the position of lieutenant governor and served in this position until January of 1969, when he succeeded George Romney, who was appointed to be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, as governor. He went on to serve as governor for the next 14 years before stepping down in 1983. During his tenure as governor, he was considered a moderate in the mold of Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York. After leaving office, he endorsed candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties for various offices.
