Glenn Douglass Bennett

Glenn Douglas Bennett, 85, passed away October 18, 2019 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Services will b at 2 P.M. Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Bethel Assembly Church with Pastor Carter Edmondson officiating. Interment will be at Garden of Memories directed by McCoy Funeral Home. A family visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Monday evening at McCoy Funeral Home.

Glenn was born in Sweetwater, Texas on October 24, 1933 to Walter Douglas Bennett and Ora Lee (Bardwell) Bennett. He graduated Valedictorian from Divide High School in 1951 and graduated from McMurry University with a Bachelor's degree in Business in 1955. He married Lylia Joyce Moore on May 22, 1955 in Abilene, Texas. He was drafted in 1955 and served in the Army until 1957. They moved to Sweetwater in 1958 where Glenn opened the Bennett Agency and continued to work there until his death. Glenn was a member of Bethel Assembly Church and a true servant to the community and his church.

He is survived by two sons, Terry Bennett and wife Ame of Sweetwater, and David Bennett and wife Trudy of Sweetwater; four grandchildren, Mandy Richburg and husband Lance of Pampa, TX, Brandon Bennett and wife Mollie of Amarillo, Dane Bennett and wife Ariel of Sealy, TX and Dylan Bennett of Lubbock; five great-grandchildren, Kyndal and Corbin Knapp of Pampa, Hayden, Mason and Hannah Bennett of Amarillo; and a sister, Margaret Bennett Watts of Sweetwater. Also surviving are six step-grandchildren, AJ Monroe, Ashton Monroe and Mark and Victoria Monroe, Shank and Taryn Davis, Patrick and Aubra Fahy and Loran Hendrix; and eight step-great-grandchildren, Emily, Kaci and Molly Richburg, Karalyn Monroe, Kase Monroe, Kreed and Graeson Davis, and Mercer Fahy.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lylia Joyce Moore Bennett on May 19, 2017; his parents, Walter Douglas Bennett in 1973 and Ora Lee Bardwell Bennett in 1996; a sister, Eva Ruth Bennett in 1919 and a brother, Walter E. Bennett in 1977.

Pallbearers will be Dane Bennett, Dylan Bennett, Brandon Bennett, Lance Richburg, Mandy Richburg, Gill Cherry.

The family request in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sweetwater Emmaus Community, P.O. Box 1339, Sweetwater, TX 79556.

Glenn Douglas Bennett and Lylia (Moore) Bennett

Glenn Douglas Bennett, the son of Walter Douglas Bennett and Ora Lee (Bardwell) Bennett, was born on Oct. 4, 1933 in Sweetwater, Texas.

Glenn and his parents lived in Sweetwater until 1946 when they moved to Divide on the home place of Ora Lee's parents, the Glenn Bardwells. Glenn Bennett attended Divide High School where he was active in football and the forensic events. He graduated high school in 1951. He attended McMurry College where he received a business degree in 1955.

On May 22, 1955, the same day he graduated from McMurry, he married Lylia Moore of Abilene. He then served in the Army from 1955 to 1957. They then came to Sweetwater and Glenn went to work with his parents in the insurance business.

Glenn and Lylia have two sons, Terry and David. When the sons were old enough to go to school, Lylia finished her college degree. She then began to teach in the Sweetwater schools. She taught in the "Plan A" programs for many years. She left teaching o work with her husband in the real estate business.

Ora Lee and Walter retired and Glenn became the owner of the Bennett Insurance Agency. In 1960, Glenn and Van Baucum formed the Bennett & Baucum Agency. This agency was 24 years old in 1984.

Glenn has served Sweetwater as a City Commissioner, Mayor in 1972, served on the West Central Texas Council of Government, and was on the Board of Directors of Bitter Creek Water Supply for several years. He is an elder in the First Christian Church.

Glenn was elected young man of the year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1963. He has continued to be very active in civic affairs. In March of 1980, Glenn was made a director in the First National Bank. He also belongs to the Sweetwater Rotary Club.

Both of Glenn and Lylia's sons have graduated from Sweetwater schools. Terry Douglas is married to Donna Frizzell and they have two children, Billy Don and Mandy. Terry is associated with his father in the Bennett and Baucum Insurance and Real Estate Agency.

David Allen, in 1984, is still single and works for Ludlum Measurements, Inc.
