Nevada Journal, Nevada, Iowa, Thursday, April 20th, 2000, Page 7, OBITUARIES - Jack D. Whaley - July 24, 1915, to April 13, 2000 - Jack D Whaley, 84, of Maxwell, died of pneumonia Thursday, April 13, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
He was born July 24, 1915, in Harvey to John L. and Fern Olive (Dixon) Whaley. He married Helen "Leora" Hubbard on Feb. 10, 1946, in Nevada. He served in the Navy during World War II. He returned to the Maxwell area after the war and farmed. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Maxwell, the Maxwell VFW and Maxwell American Legion; the Masonic Lodge- Hearald Lodge #455 of Maxwell; a former 4-H leader; served on the district and state Conservation boards; a school board member for 15 years; started the D. H. I A. Testing Association Board in Story County; and was recently recognized as "Citizen o the Year" in Maxwell. He enjoyed woodworking, cattle, gardening and his family.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis (and Jan) of Nevada, Dale (and Connie) of Gladbrook and Dean (and Linda) of Manson; seven grandchildren: Two brothers, Warren of Knoxville and Robert of Nashville; and three sisters, Frances Smith of Hartford, Betty Clark of Fairfield and Martha Hyde of Fullerton, Calif.
His parents and his wife, on May 14, 1985, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday at Maxwell First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Burket officiating. Burial was in the Woodland Cemetery, Iowa Center. Memorials may be made to the Jack D. Whaley Memorial Fund. Bacon Funeral Home, Maxwell, handled arrangements.
