Obituary
Pat Donald Burger
(1930 - 2019)
Pat "Poppy" Donald Burger, 89, of Newalla, OK passed peacefully from this life on October 15, 2019 with his loving family by his side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Advantage Funeral and Cremation Service in Oklahoma City. A private committal service will take place at Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Poppy was born on September 18, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa to Charles Henry and Hannah Lena (Weiesnbach) Burger. Several years later the family moved to Oklahoma where he attended school in Tulsa. It was at school where he first met the love of his life, Vinita Fern Patton. After finishing schooling at Webster High School in Tulsa, Pat joined the US ARMY and was soon sent to basic training at Fort Hood before being stationed in Washington State to train for a career with the tank artillery unit. He proudly served his country in the Korean War for two years in both the infantry and tank artillery unit. Pat was honorably discharged from the ARMY in Sept. of 1952 and then returned to Oklahoma where Pat went to welding school. He married his sweetheart Vinita in Sept. of 1953. Following their marriage, they moved to Arizona to be near family. They then relocated to Fresno, CA in 1961 where he worked on the canal systems until the late 1960's. Eventually they returned to Oklahoma where Poppy worked as the Chief Construction Inspector for the City of Oklahoma City. Pat enjoyed his time working for the city and made many wonderful friends there before his retirement in 1991. Pat and Vinita spent 66 wonderful years together; were the proud parents of three children: Patricia, Debbie and Steven. Pat was a man of many interests, some of which included crafting Indian relics and weapons, fishing, hunting, gardening and traveling. He was an extremely intelligent and resourceful man, even using an old van to craft an underground tornado shelter for his family, complete with electricity, seating, and a bed. He was a proud member of the American Legion in Norman, as well as the Disabled American Veterans Association. The two cornerstones of Poppy's life were his faith and his family. He was a family man, and helped raise several of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by his kids and grandkids. He was a strong man who was unashamed of his faith in Christ. Pat never missed an opportunity to share his faith boldly with those around him and he considered himself a very blessed man. Pat was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roger Wheeler; siblings: "Jack" Robert William Burger, Catherine Louise (Burger) Wald, Mickel Raymond Burger, Gladys (Burger) Wolfenburger, "Odie" Bessie Olebelle (Burger) Howell and "Jr" Emmett William Ward; granddaughter, Kerrie (Brians) Riggs; and great grandchildren: Timothy Charles Ray and Cameron Alexander Minnick. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vinita Fern (Patton) Burger; children: Patricia (Burger) Leflore and husband Floyd, Deborah (Burger) Wheeler, and Steven Burger; brothers, Johnny Lee Burger and wife Ann and Henry Allen Ward and wife Kathy; grandchildren: Kevin Brians, Sally Mohawk, Stacy Burger and Sandie Scheff; great grandchildren: Kimberly Baker, Letha Wheeler, Celina Wheeler, Raymond Zeman, Wyatt Zeman, Johnathon Wheeler, Cherokee Mohawk, Billye-Jo Mohawk , McKenzie Mohawk, Summer Rea, Galen Mohawk, William Mohawk, Tiara Riggs, Samuel Riggs, Bailey Brians, Shelby Brians, Mary Brians, Elizabeth Brians, Stephanie Burger, McKenzie Burger, Miley Burger, Skylar Burger, Jordan Minnick and Eian Minnick; great-great grandchildren: Jaxson, Elijah, Violet, Orion and Peyton; and special friend Hue, as well as numerous other beloved extended family members and friends. The Burger family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the nurses and the chaplain with Valir Hospice for the exceptional care and support that they provided to their family over the past few months. Condolences may be sent to the family via an online guestbook at Advantageokc.com.
