Wanda Charline Morris, age 86 of Warren, died Monday, April 8, 2019 at Ascension St. John Hospital at their Warren Campus. She was born January 1, 1933 in Putnam County, Tennessee, daughter of the late Charlie Wheeler and the late Manson Mary (nee: Cassity) Welch.
For this down-to-earth kind of lady, Charline had some deep seated roots as a Warren resident and was about to embark upon a 70 year anniversary of living in the same house from her youth. Once the home of her parents, Charline simply remained there throughout her adult life enjoying the comforts she had come to know with no reason to change. Never having children of her own, it was just her & Charlie livin' large in their Warren abode together. But she certainly wasn't absent kids as Wanda lovingly bore the moniker of "Aunt,"…and cherished her brood of nieces and nephews that enveloped her life.
When it came to her favorite pastimes and tastes, many will attest to the passion she had for cars, especially when it came to the classics. The "oldies but goodies" were the flavor of the day,…and she always had a soft spot for Cadillac's. Coming from an era where some of the finest machines rolled off the lines in Detroit, Charline remembered them well from their inception and simply kept the fires burning down deep inside. But cars weren't merely for her visual enjoyment, they were also quite instrumental on Charline's many vacations as cars were the only mode of transportation that she would entertain. No boats, no planes or trains,…just a dependable automobile, a full tank of gas, and a good map, and she was off to see the sights. From Michigan to Florida, out to California and everywhere in between, Charline enjoyed putting the petal to the metal and heading out on her countless treks across America,…and created a host of spectacular memories along the way.
Other passions of Charline's included feeding her sporting hunger,…like her fervor for the game of bowling. Known for her prowess on the alleys, Charline's skills and expertise were certainly exercised on the many leagues she was a part of over the years. Always in search of that elusive 300 Game, she managed to put the hurt on many-a-bowling pin with that goal in mind. But she also made sure that the fun & frivolity of the game were enjoyed as well. Charline was also quite the fan of her Boys in the Winged Wheel, the Detroit Red Wings! And she's hung tough through it all. From the days of the "Dead Wings" to the days of watching them hoist the coveted Stanley Cup over their heads in ultimate victory, Charline was one of the Wings' most devout supporters and fans.
There's an old adage that says; "when you're eating, you're happy,"…so Charline often sought her happiness at a place in Warren called the "Country Oven." A favorite spot for many of the locals, it was like Charline's home away from home. And there was never any guesswork as to what her order would be,…a Hamburger, well-done, with a tomato and ketchup,…each and every time. Hey, you gotta go with a good thing, right?
Yet of all the things she coveted,…cars, traveling, bowling, the Wings, and burgers at the C.O.,…there's one other vital addition to that list, her hair! That's right…every Saturday, like clockwork, Charline had a standing appointment with her Coveted Beautician to style and set her hair for Sunday and the ensuing week ahead. And you needed to make sure you were keeping a safe distance from her "fancy do" or you were bound to hear those fateful words, "Don't touch the hair!" What her stylist accomplished every Saturday was nothing short of a masterpiece, so Charline was simply making sure her artwork was well protected.
A loving wife, sister and aunt, Charline was a dear soul who touched numerous lives with her kindness and compassion, and she absolutely loved little kids. Perhaps it was a gift from God, because she didn't have her own, that He gave Wanda an incredible capacity to love His little ones,…and she did so with the heart of a mother. She has run the race, fought the good fight, and now goes to her rest in the sky. She will truly be missed.
