On Friday, October 9, 2015, a beautiful rose, picked from the garden, Bettie Elizabeth James was called to her heavenly home. Born in Henrico County, Virginia on January 18, 1920. Bettie was the oldest daughter, born to the late Edward and Agnes Atkins. She is preceded in death by husband of 67 years, Ollie S. James; two sons, Louis and Oliver James; six brothers, Onell, Edward, Pete, Richard, Ernest and Linwood; one sister, Rachael Atkins.

Bettie was educated in Henrico County, Virginia. She accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Henrico County, Virginia for many years where she was on the Missionary Board. She was a faithful servant.

Bettie was a devoted wife and mother, taking care of many neighborhood children, ailing family members and neighbors. She loved to cook. She was famous for her homemade rolls and biscuits. She loved staying connected with her sisters, sons and daughters constantly by way of telephone. Her inward spirit altered her, and by their voices, when her children needed her the most. Her famous saying was “It is always something to do, if you choose to do it.”

She leaves to cherish five daughters, Barbara (Raymond) Street, Bertha James, Alice Lyons, Bernice (John) Bentley Jr. and Frances (Larry) Arrington Sr.; four sons, Onell (Hazel), Pernell, Joseph Sr. and Richard (Mary) James, Sr.; sister, Marie Bagby, Mattie Thorpe, Bernice Jonathan, Thelma Cosby and Irene Bagby; sister-in-law, Mozelle Atkins; 39 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren; two devoted cousins, Ida Washington and Ardell Atkins and a host of other relatives and friends.
