1930 ~ 2019 (AGE 89)

Harry L James, 89, of Snow Camp passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 10th, 2019. Harry was born in Durham to the late Percy and Corene James and was the husband of 68 years to Norene C James who survives.

After moving at the age of 5, Harry spent his formative years on East Davis Street in Burlington. Joining the US Navy in 1948, Harry was assigned to the USS Buck with post war duties in the East China Sea. Upon returning home he married Norene Coble and subsequently moved to the farm on which they built their life together. In the early days Harry worked for A&P in the meat department but eventually was employed for 33 years and retired from Western Electric /AT&T. Harry enjoyed surf fishing and every fall found him and his whole family at Cape Hatteras or Ocracoke chasing the big ones. Harry was also an accomplished archer and bowler and had a passion for both. He enjoyed competition and collected friends and trophies across all of NC. Harry had an eye for photography and always had his camera on hand for every family gathering. Many will remember his time umpiring youth sports in Alamance County and his thunderous “Strike” calls that echoed across the ballfield. Harry truly enjoyed his life and taught us all “Not to sweat the small stuff”!

Survivors include the love of his life, Norene C James of the home; his sister June Gooding of Emerald Isle; daughters Connie M Isley and husband Mike of Snow Camp; Susan L Dunbar of Burgaw along with his son Harry Leonard James Jr and wife Lori of Wilmington. Harry was also very proud of and survived by 6 grandchildren, Jeremy Smart and wife Jennifer, Joshua Dunbar, Sarah Isley, Harrison James, Savanna Stakely and Dylan James; 2 great grandchildren, Maddie and Paxton; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Dianne J Stakely along with son in law, Peter Dunbar.

The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral Service in Graham from 5-7 PM Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, October 14, at Mt Hermon Methodist Church in Graham NC. with burial in the church cemetery.
