Murder victim.

Russell Stager appeared to have it all in the late 1980s. He was a respected baseball coach at Durham High School and had a loving wife.

Russ was shot in the head by his wife Barbara Stager as he slept on February 1, 1988.

At 6:08 a.m. on 1 February 1988, the police in Durham, North Carolina got a call from Mrs. Stager, reporting that her husband had been shot. She told the responding officers that her husband kept a handgun under his pillow when he slept, and that she must have touched it as she stirred in her sleep, causing it to discharge and kill Mr. Stager. At first the police accepted this account and ruled the incident an accidental shooting. According to shocked friends, coworkers and family members, Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, and Christian.

Russell Stager has already had several conversations with Jo Lynn Snow, his first wife about his troubled second marriage, the financial problems and his wife's promiscuity. This time though, Russ asks Jo Lynn a favor.
Jo Lynn said; "He asked me, if anything ever happened to him, would I please look into it."

Russell Stager's family, friends and former wife don't believe the shooting is an accident. It's pointed out to police that Russell Stager was in the National Guard and was well trained in weapons and never would have slept with a loaded gun under his pillow.

A jury sentenced Stager to death in 1989 for fatally shooting her husband, Russ Stager, in the bed of their Durham home. The sentence later was changed to a life sentence which, under the law of the day, allowed for the possibility of parole.

Russell is survived by his Mother Doris Stager, Sister Cindy Stager Thomas and Ex-Wife & close friend Jo Lynn Snow.
