LITCHFIELD — A memorial service for Dr. William John Henry Fischer Jr., 83, of Litchfield, was held Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church.

Dr. Fischer, husband of Claudia Gregory Fischer, died Monday, May 26, at the Whitney Center in Hamden after a long illness. He was born April 22, 1914, in Milford, son of the late Emma Doll and Dr. William John Henry Fischer. He graduated from The Taft School in Watertown in 1933, Yale College in 1937 and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1941. He served in India as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. He practiced internal medicine in Providence, R.I., until he retired in 1979. He was governor of the Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Physicians, in which he was inducted as a fellow. He served as director of medical education at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and was involved in the development of the Brown University Medical School. He was an active member of many organizations and clubs, including the Friday Night Club, the Johnnycake Society and the Agawara Hunt Club in Rhode Island; the Sanctum and the Litchfield Country Club in Connecticut; and the Country Club of North Carolina. After he retired, he pursued and supported organizations devoted to medicine, gardening, birding and golfing. He was an avid and successful golfer who started as a professional in Litchfield.

Besides his wife, he leaves three children, Susan Spencer of Litchfield, William Fischer of Bethany and Durinda Chace of Middletown, R.I.; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his second wife, Elma Tibbetts Fischer.
