Henry and Martha Brownlow Watkins immigrated to New Orleans with their newborn daughter Emma in 1846. He was a maritime engineer and established a local iron foundry and provided towboat service to the bustling port on the lower Atchafalaya River. He was the first Justice of the Peace of Brashear City, later known as Morgan City. He and Martha had 5 children before she died sometime before during the 1860s. He then married widow Emily Gouner Johnson, having 2 sons and one adopted daughter. His son Samuel went on to become the Mayor of Berwick.
