Gwendolyn (Gwen) was born on October 22, 1950 in Decatur, lllinois to Thomas and Vernell Sain. She was a 1968 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School.Gwen married Bruce Hawkins in 1984.
For nearly four decades (1972-2009) Gwen performed various tasks and functions for the telephone company, retiring as a custom business practitioner from Ameritech.
As a life long member of St. Peter's AME Church, Gwen manifested her doctrinal understanding and acceptance by her holding several church related positions, singing in the choir and performing various other services until she was strickened by a debilitating and prolonged illness.
Gwen was a virtuous person, known by the incalculable number of family membersand friends to have displayed temperance, truthfulness, friendliness and courage. These could be easily discerned upon initial and casual interaction with her, but to those who knew her best,
Gwen loved God, was loyal, precious, had inner beauty, abided in her home, was good to her husband, blessed her family and lived by love.
Surviving and cherishing Gwen's life and memory are her surviving elders, Boast (Jeannie) Sain, Alberta Redeye, Callie Hawkins, Doris Banks, Hullen (Uncle Red) Taylor and Sarah Sain; her husband, Bruce Hawkins; sons, Devon Joyner and Emile (Temethia) Joyner; sisters, Elizabeth (Roger) Tucker, Francene (Mark) Rawls, and Shirley Barbee, all of Decatur, Illinois; grandchildren, Shytearia Parker, Sacorey Joyner, and Shevonte Joyner, all of Columbus, Georgia; De'Abrion Joyner, Maleeyah Joyner, Jesiah Joyner, Skylar Joyner, all of Decatur and great-grand-children, Aubrei' Pearson and Alyse Pearson
Gwen was preceeded in death by her parents and two sisters, Wanda Barbee and Cheryl Sain-Anderson.
