A memorial service celebrating the life of Ronald C. Martin, age 83, will be held at 10 am on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home, Natchitoches, LA. Visitation will precede the service at the funeral home from 9:30 am until 10 am. At his request, a private interment will be held at a later date.

Ronald was born in Boyce, LA to Coleman and Ella Mae Beebe Martin, and passed away in Alexandria, LA on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. He graduated from Natchitoches High School as valedictorian of the class of 1948, having also served his senior year as president of the Student Body. He received letters in football, baseball and basketball. He was an all-state center for the 1946-47 Class A State Champion basketball team. He was a graduate of Northwestern State College in 1952 with over 150 academic credit hours. During his collegiate years, he was the first baseman and pitcher on the Demon Baseball team. He was also the NSC Potpourri editor for the year 1950-51.

After graduating in 1955 from LSU Law School, he worked four months with the Watson & Williams law firm in Natchitoches. Having also served in the Louisiana National Guard since 1947, he entered the U.S. Army in September of 1955 and completed a two year hitch being honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class. He then resumed practicing law in Natchitoches, forming a partnership with Sam Nelken. He was appointed Assistant District Attorney of the Tenth Judicial District serving Natchitoches and Red River Parishes in 1960, elected District Attorney in 1966, re-elected in 1972 and 1978, and retiring at the end of his term in 1984. In 1968 he was awarded his Juris Doctorate from LSU Law School.

Ronald was an active member of the LA Assistant District Attorney's Association, serving as its President the year before being elected as District Attorney. He also served as President of the LA District Attorney's Association in 1975, and continued to serve on its Board of Directors until 1984. He also served as a member of the National District Attorneys Association for two years, 1983 and 1984. A graduate of the National College of District Attorneys in 1971, he served that organization as a member of its Curriculum Committee. In 1976, President Jimmy Carter appointed him as a member of the Child Support Enforcement Advisory Committee in Washington, D.C. He was a founding member of the Kisatchie Legal Services, serving as its first President in 1978. He also actively assisted in the creation and opening of Cane River Children's Services.

Ronald was active in various local civic organizations, serving as President of NSU Alumni Association, Chairman, Natchitoches Christmas Festival, member of Lions Club, Jaycees, Masonic Order, Natchitoches Country Club, Elks Lodge, and was a founding member of the Can River Fishing Club which sought to improve the recreation facility for both the City and the Parish. Also an avid golfer, he was the Club Champion in 1984.

In 1987 Ronald and Vicki opened Martin's Roost, a bed and breakfast, discovering new interests outside the legal profession. With Vicki's support and encouragement, Ronald found he had a talent to create various crafts from wood. Their doll houses found homes as far away as Europe, and their miniature reproductions of historical buildings from Natchitoches and Louisiana are shown in many of the scenes of the movie, Steel Magnolias, as are Vicki's counted cross-stitch and paintings. Serious health issues required them to close their bed and breakfast in 1997.

Having worked as a staff radio announcer and disc jockey for Radio Station KWCJ (later KNOC) in 1948-49, he became interested in the popular music of the period. He began collecting records of the music, so that up to his death he was able to share this music with his friends of the era, some of which music will also be shared during the memorial service.

Ronald was a member of the First Methodist Church of Natchitoches, as well as active in the creation of the Wesley Foundation to minister to the needs of the young NSC collegiate members of the Methodist Church, serving as the foundations first secretary-treasurer. Ronald was predeceased by his grandparents, Tom and Noramie Rachal Martin, Pleas and Molly Bedsole Beebe; his parents, Coleman I. and Ella Mae Beebe Martine; and his infant grandson, Wade Martin. Ronald is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Vicki Teague Martin; children, Coleman M. Martin, M. Beebe Martin and his wife Kim, Chris Martin and his wife Reyna, Thomas G. Martin, Emmella Martin Walker and her husband Mark, as well as grandchildren, cousins and relatives.

Special thanks are gratefully extended to the medical firm of Dr.'s Freedman and Hanley, their nurses and staff, and the ladies and staff of Cade's Pharmacy for their extraordinary courtesies and competent services for the last several years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Natchitoches Genealogy Association, P. O. Box 1349, Natchitoches, Louisiana 71458-1349 or to St. Charles of Borromeo Catholic Chapel located in Bermuda, LA c/o the Blanchard Family, 1490 Hwy 119, Bermuda, LA 71456.

Special people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.
