Governor and Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation in 1882. He was the son of Cornelius and Amy McCurtain. He married Marie Riley and Jane Frances Austin. He served in the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel of the First Choctaw Battalion.

Captain, Co. G. 1st Indian Territory Mounted Rifles. 1 Choctaw & Chickasaw Mtd Rifles CSA. Buried in the Old Choctaw Cemetery in Tuskahoma.
