Julie Elizabeth Williams, age 61, departed this earth to join the Lord on September 25, 2019. Julie was the second child and only daughter of the union of Stuart Calvin Williams, Sr. (deceased) and Frances Gloria Williams. Julie was born on December 7, 1957 (Pearl Harbor Day), and her life events were as memorable as the day she was born. Julie spent her formative years as a loving daughter and faithful sister. She accepted Christ into her life at an early age and was baptized at Long Branch Baptist Church. Julie remained a woman of deep and abiding faith throughout her life.
Julie lived as an energetic, kind, good-hearted and intellectually curious person. Her academic pursuits began when she was a young child, where she naturally excelled in school. Julie was always striving for excellence and performing at the highest levels. Her drive and intelligence carried her to the highest levels of her graduating Class of 1975 at Union High School in Bowling Green, VA. Her presence on the dais as the co-valedictorian was only the beginning of Julie’s academic success and one of many proud moments for her family to witness throughout her lifetime.
Julie was not only an academic standout; she was also a brave and courageous young woman who was prepared to blaze trails and set a course for others to follow. She took her academic prowess to The College of William and Mary and pursued an interest in psychology, sociology and the sciences of thought. While at William and Mary, she developed a lifelong friendship with the Honorable Birdie Hairston Jamison. As Julie, Birdie and their group of close friends excelled at William and Mary, they were always dedicated to helping and mentoring others. Julie was excited to start “helping” at home and she proudly facilitated her youngest brother Robby attending the inaugural Summer Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP) at William & Mary. This was the beginning of Julie’s keen interest in helping others' academic pursuits. This was an interest evidenced by the calls, letters and comments from the many she helped throughout the years.
Continuing to set her own path, Julie continued her education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she earned her Ph.D. in Psychology. Julie’s educational endeavors continued throughout her life. She was a pre-doctoral fellow at Yale University, awarded an American Council on Education (ACE) fellowship served at William & Mary and led the first ACE Fellows convening to three South African Universities. She’s held faculty and administrative appointments at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee Medical Center and Knoxville College.
Julie’s career soared at The University of New Hampshire, achieving the rank of Senior Vice Provost for Engagement and Faculty Development. At UNH, she led the development of many innovative programs, such as The Research and Engagement Academy, The Writing Academy, The Post-Doctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholars and the crown jewel of Julie’s professional career, the partnership she developed between the University of New Hampshire and Howard University to enhance academic excellence.
While Julie’s educational endeavors were a large part of her life, she was truly happiest when she was with and involved in helping family. Whether providing sage advice or giving of her time or resources, Julie was a committed family person. She loved her family and traveled to family events across the country. She was devoted to her father, her brothers and especially her mother, Frances. Upon the death of Stuart, Julie took the lead to help her mother deal with the loss. Their time together developed into a true friendship and an incredible bond. They traveled across the globe together and shared a true enjoyment of each other’s company.
Julie was predeceased in death by her father Stuart C. Williams, Sr., and her brother Stuart C. Williams, Jr. She is survived by her dear mother, Frances Gloria Williams; her brother, Robert L. Williams; her nieces, Jovonda Rochelle Hunter, Taylor Cherise Williams, Lauren Robi Williams, Kendall Cheyanne Williams, and Gabrielle Caroline Williams; and great-nephews, Anden R. Hunter and Andrew C. Hunter.
