Brenda Gayle King Payne, 67, went to be with her Lord late Friday night, October 11, 2019 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Visitation for friends and family will be 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Girdner Funeral Home, 141 Elm St., Abilene, TX.

The memorial service will be held Friday, October 18, 2019 at 11 AM at Aldersgate Methodist Church, 1741 Sayles Blvd. in Abilene, TX. A reception will be held at Aldersgate Methodist Church fellowship hall following the service.

Brenda was born in San Angelo, TX to parents Wayne and Elaine King. She grew up in the Ballinger/Winters area and graduated from Winters High School in 1971.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology from Hardin-Simmons University in 1979.

Brenda married David Payne in August of 1980 and they loved each other unendingly. Brenda and David pastored a church together and ministered to many through music. They raised three children, Ann, Abigail, and Thomas until David went to be with Jesus in 1991. After his passing, Brenda continued to raise their children on her own.

Brenda homeschooled all three children while cleaning houses to help support her family. After their graduations, she went back to work as a speech therapist at Thomas Elementary in AISD where many colleagues became dear friends.

Brenda was a mother to many in addition to her biological children. Phrases like “second mom,” “the mom I needed,” and “like a mother” have been uttered by dozens to describe her.

Besides excelling in her career as a speech therapist, she was an excellent seamstress, fantastic cook, and a miracle worker in the garden. She was clever enough to fix just about anything and resourceful enough to do so with next to nothing.

Brenda had a quick wit, a compassionate heart, was a fiercely loyal friend, and had more grit than most. Brenda loved her children and grandchildren veraciously and was adored by them in return.

In addition to her children, Brenda is also survived by her Mother, Elaine King of Ballinger and brothers, Scott and wife, Debbie of Ballinger, Kelly and wife Pam, of Ballinger; Pat and wife Rachel, of Marble Falls
