Philip Whitman White
Grantsboro
Philip Whitman White, 84 of Grantsboro, NC passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018, at home. Phil was born on August 18, 1934 in Newburgh, NY. After two years in college he joined the U.S Navy where he completed his initial training at USNTC Bainbridge MD. He later completed flight school and earned his wings at NAS Pensacola. After serving over nine years active duty and USN Reserve, Phil decided in 1967 to transfer to the US Marine Corp so he could go on active duty and serve his beloved USA in the Vietnam War. He served one tour in Vietnam in 1969-1970.
Phil was never happier than when he was in the cockpit of his beloved A-4 Skyhawk. The man simply loved flying more than any other job in the world and was amazed that he was paid to do something he loved with such a passion.
Within a few years of returning to "the world" he was discharged as a Captain from the USMC and went to work as a civil servant at Cherry Point, NC. Phil attended ECU and completed his undergraduate degree in 1978. He then earned an advanced degree from Pepperdine University. He continued to work at MCAS Cherry Point until his retirement.
In 1968, he married the love of his life, Frances Hardin, and enjoyed a joyous life raising Fran's four children. After retiring from his civil service job at Cherry Point, he and Fran enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. They spent many happy years living on Beard's Creek in Arapahoe or, "down in the county", as he loved to refer to their little piece of paradise.
Phil will always be remembered for his intellect, his mastery of the English language, and his ability to engage and befriend anyone. He possessed a great sense of humor and was always smiling. We will all miss the twinkle in his eyes and his sharp wit. Mostly his friends and family will miss his love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. & Frances White; wife, Frances Gayle White; son, Thomas Hardin; and grandson, Josh Hines.
He is survived by his children, Pamela Gardner (Barry) of Raleigh, James Hardin (Tammy) of Greenville, NC, Roberta Caton (Tracy) of Grantsboro, Lisa Dilts of Durham and Frannie Westcott (Dusty) of Durham; daughter-in-law, Beth Hardin of Winston Salem, NC; brother, Donald White (Phyllis) of Moorestown, TN; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., October 27th at Montlawn Cemetery, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of Pamlico, PO Box 6, Bayboro, NC 28515.
Arrangements by Bryant Funeral Home & Crematory, Alliance.
