Before the Revolution,James Johnston purchased a large tract of land on the Catawba River in Tryon County, North Carolina. He built a home in 1782 for his family, called "Oak Grove", in what is present day Gaston County. Johnston passed away on July 23rd, 1805 and was buried in the Johnston Family private cemetery at Oak Grove., as well as several other family members. The building was demolished in the 1950s.

North Carolina placed a highway marker where the home once stood, which is now near Lucia in Gaston County, North Carolina.
