Carolyn Jane Coates Rice, 77, of Weaverville, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018.
Carolyn was born September 11, 1941 in Madison County but lived in Buncombe County for over 55 years. She was a retired tour guide of the Vance Birthplace, a member of the NC Homemakers Association, past President of the Reems Creek Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a volunteer at the Dry Ridge Museum in Weaverville, and a number of other community services or activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Eula Slagle Coates, and by her husband of 59 years, Julian “Jim” Rice.
Surviving are her son, Julian Michael “Mike” Rice and his wife Tracy of Barnardsville; brother, Darrell Coates and his wife Bonnie; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 in the Chapel of Madison Funeral Services with Reverends Jay Rabuck officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison Seminary Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Reems Creek Beech Presbyterian Church or to the Reems Creek Fire Department.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 - 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
