Oliver Jeff Kennedy was the only child and son of Jonathan Ralston Kennedy and his first wife Mary Ellinor Neal. His father, Jonathan Ralston Kennedy was originally from Brown County, Ohio.

He was named in honor of his uncle, Oliver Perry Kennedy (#30818103) of Brown County, Ohio and then of Douglas County, Kansas.

He was the grandson of William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio with Margaret Jane, as a widow, of Douglas County, Kansas.

In 1855, as a four year-old, Oliver, his father Jonathan and widowed grandmother, Margaret Jane, with twenty-five Kennedy relatives, made a trek together from Brown County, Ohio and Schuyler County, Illinois, where his uncle William Bainbridge Kennedy then resided, to Douglas County, Kansas where they settled in an area called the Kennedy Valley on the Wakarusa River. They went to Douglas County where they each could stake a land claim for $1.00 per acre. It was a difficult life, and many of the Kennedy family later relocated elsewhere, including Oliver Jeff Kennedy.

His father married for a second time to Mary Ellinor Jones Kennedy and had four more children, Matilda Kennedy, Emma Alice Kennedy Chaney, Katharine "Katie" Kansas Kennedy Roberts and Orange John Kennedy. All of these children from the second marriage were born deaf from a maternal gene defect except for Katharine Kansas Kennedy Roberts.

From his obituary:

Oliver Jeff Kennedy died suddenly at his home in San Diego, California October 8. Mr. Kennedy’s early life was spent at Lawrence, Kansas. He came to Colorado early in the 1870's and for some time was a teacher in the Deaf Mute institute in Colorado Springs, which was founded by his father, Jonathan Ralston Kennedy. Later he lived at Montrose and Grand Junction. He was a resident of Salida and vicinity for about twenty years, during which period he was engaged in real estate, farming, prospecting and other activities. He removed from Salida, California to San Diego and at the time of his death was associated with his son in a garage and auto supply business. He was about 67 years of age. Mr. Kennedy was married in 1878 to Miss Anna J. Watkins, whose family is well remembered by old timers in this community. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Cooperrider of Arcater, Calif., and Miss Opal Marsden, now at San Diego; one son, Kenneth Ben Kennedy, of San Diego, and two sisters, Katherine "Kate" Kansas Kennedy Roberts of Santa Ana, California, and Mrs. H.M. Herbert of Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose daughter, Mrs. C.H. Hilles, is a resident of Salida. Mr. Kennedy had a keen active mind, which together with a genial, kindly disposition, made him a most agreeable companion. The news of his death brings regret to many old citizens.
