Eleanor Viola Cox, known to all as Peggy, of St. Clair, MO, departed this life in St. Clair on October 8, 2019, having reached the age of eighty-five years, five months and thirteen days. Peggy was born in St. Clair on April 25, 1934, daughter of George W. Ritchey and Clestia Ritchey nee Anderson. On August 27, 1954, she was united in marriage to Vernon Lee Cox, Sr. and four children came to bless this union.

Peggy is survived by two sons, Vernon L. Cox, Jr. and wife, Nettie, of Sullivan, MO, and John E. Cox and wife, Ruby L., of Sullivan; by her daughter, Vicky Pelton and husband, Carl, of Sullivan; by two grandchildren, Jessica Angell of Sullivan and Andrea Pelton of Sullivan; by one great-grandchild, Aubree Angell of Sullivan; by her sister, Lois Sheridan of St. Clair, MO; by her step-sister, Shirley Chrisman and husband, Donald, of Aledo, IL; by two sisters-in-law, Mary Cox of Albuquerque, NM, and Millie Barnes of St. Clair; by her brother-in-law, Jerry Bartnett of Richmond, VA; by nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Clestia Ritchey; by her husband, Vernon Cox Sr.; by one son, Charles L. Cox; by her sister, Lois Sheridan, and by her brother, Raymond Barnes.

Peggy was a Christian and member of New Hope Baptist Church in Sullivan, MO. As a young woman she was employed as an office worker at Deb Shoe Factory in St. Clair, MO. She later worked as a cook in the St. Clair Public School for twenty years. Peggy was a fifty-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, St. Clair Chapter 96, and a member of Elks Lodge 2651 in St. Clair. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed doing embroidery. Peggy was a great cook and had done a lot of canning over the years. She also liked to sing. Peggy loved the company of people, especially family and friends. Her children and grandchildren held a special place in her heart, as she did in their hearts and the many precious memories created will be cherished by all.

A sweet and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great and great-great-aunt, cousin and treasured friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held at 5:00 PM Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO, with Brother Rick Busse officiating. A private committal will take place at a later date at Mt. Zion Cemetery, St. Clair, MO. Memorials may be made to OES, St. Clair Chapter 96.
