Son of the late Commander William Charles Holland Hastings, Royal Navy, and Charlotte Elizabeth Hastings (nee Thompson). Married on 30 Jun 1906 Mary, daughter of the late R. M. Kennedy, ICS, Commissioner, Northern Division, Bombay Presidency. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Indian Army (unattached list) as a 2nd Lieutenant 21 Jan 1903. Spent his probationary year with a British Regiment in India. Joined the 92nd Punjabis on 6 Apr 1904. Promoted to Lieutenant on 21 Apr 1905, to Captain on 21 Jan 1912, to Major on 1 Jan 1916, to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel on 3 Jun 1919. He served with the 92nd Punjabis at the start of WW1 in Egypt and was then Brigade Machine Gun Ofifcer with the Australian 1st Light Horse Brigade and then a staff officer (GSO3) in the Australian and New Zealand Division in Gallipoli Jul 1915-Dec 1916, before going to France as Brigade Major with the 3rd New Zealand Infantry Brigade Dec 1916-Mar 1917. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) [London Gazette: 1 Jan 1917]. He served in Mesopotamia Jun 1917 to Jan 1918 with the Indian Expeditionary Force. After WW1 the 92nd Punjabis were retitled as the 4th/8th (Prince of Wales's Own) Punjab Regiment and he was appointed Commandant. He died aged 46 years in Kamptee, Nagpur, India. He was buried on 27 May 1930 at Kamptee, Bengal, India.
