David E. Lawton, 82, of Collins Center, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2019 at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital after an extended illness.

Lawton was born in North Collins on June 3, 1937 to the late Bertrand and Velma (nee Taylor) Lawton. He married Judith A. Churchill on Aug. 18, 1962.

He attended North Collins Central School and graduated in 1955. He then joined the Navy. After being discharged, he was hired by National Fuel Gas, where he worked for more than 30 years.

For decades, Lawton was active in the Collins/Gowanda community. He volunteered with the Collins Center Fire Department for 50 years and was Fire Chief for several of those years. He was also a volunteer at the Gowanda Food Pantry and a member of local ham radio clubs.

Lawton’s Christian faith and church life were deeply important to him. He was a longtime member of Gowanda Free Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees. He went on several international mission trips, including trips to Haiti to help the mission organizations co-founded by his wife’s parents.

In addition to his parents, Lawton was preceded in death by a brother Glenn and a sister Doreen.

Lawton is survived by his wife; children Kim Lawton of Arlington, Va., Holly Lawton of Tinley Park, Ill and Ed (Robyn) Lawton of Lake Wylie, S.C.; grandchildren Tom (Nicole), Zac, Eddy and Emmalee Lawton; a brother Clair (Carole) Lawton of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister-in-law Carol Lawton of Americus, Ga. and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Gowanda Free Methodist Church on Sept. 28. Memorials may be made to Gowanda Free Methodist Church, 149 W. Main St., Gowanda, N.Y. 14070 or to the Free Methodist International Child Care Ministry Haiti Food Fund, 770 N. High School Road, Indianapolis, Ind. 46214-3756.
