His Legacy… Charles Mark Gilson passed away October 31, 2017. He was born on September 21, 1918, in Lake Odessa, Michigan to Leon T. and Pearl (Deemer) Gilson. He will be remembered as a kind, funny, loving and generous father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, dentist, and friend. Mark proudly served his country during WWII as a United States Navy Medical Corpsman in the United States Marines.

Mark graduated from Lake Odessa High School (1936) where he played football and was president of his senior class. He followed in his brother’s footsteps and graduated from Michigan State College (1940), then onto the University of Michigan School of Dentistry graduating early in 1943 in order to serve his country in the war.

His Family… Mark will be missed by his children, Martha Ruth Phillips (Thomas) of Suttons Bay, MI, and Mary G. Layher (Richard) of Dexter, MI; grandchildren, Richard L. Barnabo (Melissa) of Dexter, MI, Gina Barnabo Thompson of Atlanta, GA, Abigail M. Phillips of Traverse City, MI, Mark T. Phillips of Portland, OR; step grand children Brad and Brian Layher, TN; great grandchildren, Elle Marie Barnabo, Tyler Louis Barnabo of Dexter, MI, Grant Charles Thompson of Atlanta, GA. Surviving nieces and nephews Judy Gilson McCalla (Darold), Charles Paul Gilson (Barbara Angell), Kathleen Rettich Bullard (Tony), and Kevin Charles Rettich (Jeanne Marie). Also surviving are stepchildren, Chris Sargent Bass (Robert), Susan Sargent Jones (Ted), Alleen Sargent (Hal). He is also survived by step grandchildren: Ann Wells McGahey (Michael), Loren Nix Farquhar (Doug), Wesley Nix (Kayla), Meade Sargent (April), Kristin Sargent, Page Sargent, and Sarah Bass and eight step great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Pearl Gilson, wives, Agnes Day Gilson, Gloria Rettich Gilson, Lamar Ellis Gilson; brother, Thomas Deemer Gilson (Marie); Daughter, Margaret Gilson; nephews, Timothy Gilson, Mark Deemer Gilson, and Michael Sargent

His Farewell… Mark’s Community Farewell will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Dexter United Methodist Church located at 7643 Huron River Drive, Dexter, MI 48130 at 2:00pm. Family and friends will gather at 1:00pm until the time of service. Dr. Matthew Hook will serve as celebrant. Memorial contributions are suggested for Arbor Hospice, Salvation Army of Walhalla, South Carolina or the Washtenaw Library for the Blind & Physically Disabled.
