Samuel was the son of Alexander Klinger, Jr. (1797-1827) and Elisabeth Schwalm (1797-1843). Though his stone gives an 1827 birth date, records from Zion (Klinger's) Lutheran Church, Erdman, Dauphin Co., state was baptized on 19 September 1824 in PA, sponsors: George Klinger and wife Eva. During the Civil War, Samuel served with Co. K, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Samuel was married three times, first to Belinda Savidge, then Catherine Kissinger, and lastly to Rebecca Cooper. Samuel fathered 11 children.

The son of Alexander & Elizabeth (Schwalm) Klinger, he married Belinda Savage or Savitch in 1848 and fathered Adeline (b. 09/16/47 - married Moses Wiest Strohecker), Albert Oliver & Clair [?] (b. 01/14/50), and Frank (b. @1851). Belinda died in 1854, and he married Catherine Kissinger in 1857, fathering Jefferson (b. 08/05/57), Mary Emmaline (b. 10/??/58), Catherine J. (b. @1858), Alexander (b. 10/04/60), and Alfred M. (b. 04/24/64). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County October 30, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a private with Co. K, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 18, 1863. Catherine died in 1868, and he married Rebecca Cooper, fathering Samuel H. (b. 04/30/71, d. 09/06/72), Thomas Fulton (b. 10/10/73), Caroline Rebecca "Carrie" (b. 06/22/77 - married Alvin Osmond Zimmerman) and Clinton Ellsworth (b. 06/23/81).
