Presidential Cabinet Secretary. A native of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and then Borger, Texas, he served as the 65th United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1979 to 1981, under then President Jimmy Carter. A 1945 gradute of the United States Coast Guard Academy he served as a Coast Guard officer in the Far East and on the United States West Coast. He later attended the Boalt Hall School of Law, at the University of California, in Berkeley, California, and it was from there that he received his law degree in 1952. Miller joined the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York, before joining the Textron, Inc, in 1956. A year later he became the Vice President of that company, President in 1960, Chief Executive Officer from in 1968, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1974, also for that company. He also served as Chairman of the Industry Council of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity from 1963 to 1965, Member of the National Council on the Humanities from 1966 to 1967, and as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1978 to 1979, succeeding Arthur F. Burns. Known as 'The Inflation Fighter,' he passed away at the age of 81.
