Unsure if he is relative/friend to Samuel Smith (#215948771) in this cemetery, also from Maryland, and served in the 26th Regiment as well. Later in life, Samuel Smith's wife was associated with John through the Lincoln League in Newburgh.
NOTE: NYS Death Index has John dying on the 5th but the headstone says the 6th. John's obituary also says he died on Sunday, which would have been July 5th. Birth date is taken from his obituary.
