Carol Jean Porter Phillips Ackerle
April 11, 1930 - October 4, 2019

Age 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior October 4, 2019 in Simpsonville, SC. She was born April 11, 1930 in Glenwood, IL, the youngest of Ellic Spencer and Hazle Claire (Hess) Porter's four children. At the age of thirteen, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized a year later at the United Church of Glenwood.

After graduating salutatorian from Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, IL in 1948, Carol worked for a year to save money for college. In 1949, she enrolled in Bob Jones University of Greenville, SC, where she met Jim Phillips. They were married August 25, 1950. Together, they faithfully served the Lord for nearly 34 years. She was trusted by her husband and did him good all the days of his life (Prov. 31:12). As a Pastor's wife, she was perfectly suited to be his ministry helpmate. She taught ladies' classes and played the organ and piano for services.

They are survived by three sons, James O. and Marie (Levy) Phillips Jr. of Taylors, SC, Scott S. and Susan (Lincoln) Phillips of Lake Alfred, FL and William N. and Marcia (Dollar) Phillips of Mocksville, NC; two daughters, Melissa D. Baker of Royersford, PA and Susan P. (Philip) Smith of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Carol is fondly remembered as Grams by sixteen grandchildren, Great Grams by 35 great grandchildren and blessed with one great-great grandchild.

Marriage and children interrupted her academic studies until 33 years later when she earned a Bachelor's degree from FaithWay Baptist College in Ypsilanti, MI. In 1984, Jim, her pastor-husband of 33 years, passed away. With grace, she ventured into new territory working full-time and eventually completing a Master of Science degree in English Education at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.

She taught English and multiple courses designed specifically for young women at three different colleges over the next 33 years - FaithWay Baptist College in Ypsilanti, Northland Baptist Bible College in Dunbar, WI and FaithWay Baptist College of Canada in Ajax, Ontario, Canada. She also served as the Dean of Women at Northland Baptist Bible College, where she impacted numerous young people for God's kingdom work.

In 2009, she married Roy Ackerle and, before the Lord took him home, they enjoyed nearly ten years together.

She loved God's Word and faithfully read it, meditated upon it and lived it out in her daily life. Many counted on her as their faithful prayer warrior. He tender heart gravitated toward those who needed special encouragement and she considered it to be an important part of the ministry God had given her. Right up until her stroke, she would take time to talk to those who others often passed by. Her great passion for music (she played the piano, organ and cello) has been beautifully passed on to her family. Some of her favorite joys included birds, flowers, dogs and baking.

Many strangers and friends regularly passed through her doors, enjoying her hospitality and feeling special and loved. Beyond that, she sacrificially took care of her blind and crippled mother-in-law and her physically and mentally disabled brother for many years.

She was diligent in caring for her children and her household and did not eat the bread of idleness. Strength and dignity were her clothing, and when she spoke, words of wisdom were shared, and the teaching of kindness was on her tongue. She taught the Word to her children by living it with incredible consistency and commitment to Christ. Her passing leaves a big hole in our lives, but our hearts are full of precious memories. Even better, we rest in the truth that those of us who know Jesus will worship and praise Him alongside her forever.

Yes, she had charm and she had beauty, but what we, her children, are most thankful for is the wonderful truth that she was a woman who feared the Lord.

Thank you for taking the time to come and celebrate her homegoing with us. We love you Mom, Mother, Grams, Great Grams, and we can't wait to see you again!

Carol's funeral service will be 11 am Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at FaithWay Baptist Church, 2020 Packard Road, Ypsilanti where the family will receive friends from 10 am until time of service. Burial will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton, MI. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Tuesday at Stark Funeral Service, Ypsilanti, MI.
