John Smith Clark's father, William Clark, was a Presbyterian minister in Jamaica. When his mother's health failed, they moved back to Scotland, later moving to Kinmount, Ontario, Canada. There John Smith Clark married Mary Jane Harris, February 4, 1874. They came directly to Geary County, Kansas, and homesteaded a farm in the Welcome neighborhood. They lived on Humboldt Creek until a house could be built.

Mary Jane Harris Clark passed away Oct. 15, 1898.

In Sept. 1902, John Smith Clark married Janet Beckett Morgan in Kinmount, Ontario, Canada. Margaret Anne Morgan, her daughter, came with them to Kansas and lived in the Clark home until her marriage to Fred L. Cross. A second daughter, Gertrude, remained in Canada.

John Smith Clark died April 15, 1915, at the home.

Janet Beckett Morgan Clark died Dec. 10, 1938 at the home of her daughter Margaret Cross in Geary County.
