MARTINEZ, David C. Born in Redlands, Calif., on February 10, 1929. He went home to be with the Lord on August 20, 2009. After graduating from Anaheim High School and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he married his high school sweetheart, Lillie in 1952. Dave moved his wife and two sons, Dave and Dennis to the Antelope Valley in 1955. He and Lillie completed their family with the arrival of their two daughters, Shelly and Leslie. Dave was a devoted husband, loving father and wonderful "gramps" as well as a great friend to many. He was well known for his sense of humor and enjoyed life to its fullest. His many hobbies included traveling, golf, fishing, tennis, coaching, teaching, and he was especially talented at "fixer upper projects". Dave was a loyal fan of the LA Dodgers, USC Football, and thoroughbred horse racing and loved a good glass of red wine. He worked at McDonnell Douglas for a short time before beginning his lifelong career with the Antelope Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District in 1959, a year after its formation. He was the sole technician and employee at the time. In 1972, he became the District Manager and stayed with the District for another 28 years until his retirement in April, 2000. During his time with the District he increased its size from 178 square miles to over 230 square miles and changed the name to the current Antelope Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District and included the surveillance and control of Africanized Honey Bees. Retirement did not stop Dave from devoting his time to the community. He volunteered for the California Highway Patrol, Lancaster CHP SVP 545. He performed 1988 hours of volunteer service assisting clerical personnel, responding to assist officers with traffic control at collision scenes, deploying the radar trailer and assisting at public affairs booths. He was also a long time member of the B.P.O. Elks 1625, Lancaster, California. Dave is survived by his son, Dennis Martinez, daughters, Shelly Martinez, Leslie Harman and husband Steve, granddaughter, Hannah, his sisters, Claudia Carpenter, Florine Bell and brother, Gilbert Martinez. He was preceded in death by Lillie, his loving wife of 57 years, his son David Allan Martinez and his brothers, Floyd, Phillip and Elmer Martinez. He was loved and admired by many and will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at Father Serra Parish, Quartz Hill. It was Daves wish that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the "Senior Volunteer Program 545", 2041 W. Avenue I, Lancaster, CA 93536. You may e-mail condolences to the family at [email protected]. Chapel of the Valley Mortuary, Palmdale Directors.
