Civil War Union Army Officer. Served as a Lieutenant first in the 1st Maine Light Artillery, then as an aide-de-camp on the staff of Maj. Gen. Zealous B. Tower. He was mortally wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run when he was with Union forces of Brig. Gen. James Ricketts' Division that attacked fruitlessly Stonewall Jackson's Confederates on the Bald Ridge line on August 30, 1862. He died on September 1 in Centerville, Virginia. His father was powerful Republican Senator William P. Fessenden, and his two brothers were Brig. Gen. James D. Fessenden and Maj. Gen. Francis Fessenden.
