Harry is the only son of Minnie Carter and Frank Dowd. His parents were not married, and he lived with his mother and grandparents John Elberson Carter and Jenny VanderHyde. His father worked for the railroad at the time of his birth, but I don' t know that he ever knew his father. His head stone says 1902 but his WW2 draft registration he listed his birth date as 30 May 1903, and his birth record says 31 May 1903. He is on the 1905 Minnesota census as Harry David age 2, not sure if David is a middle name, or misspelling of Dowd . He isn't found on the 1910-1920 federal census with John and Jenny, but is with Jenny in 1930 & 1940 as a grandson to her and a nephew to William Carter. In the later census he is listed as Harry Carter, as on his headstone. He could have been away at some kind of boarding school in 1910-1920, he finished through 7th grade.
