Richard Enloe Love, Jr. was born in Memphis, TN to Richard Enloe Love, Sr. (28 Apr 1891 - 29 Oct 1973) and Huldah Norma Akers Love (01 Jan 1893 - 13 Oct 1972). He also had an older sister, Alice Lee Love (15 Sep 1912 - 09 Jan 1993). Richard grew up in Memphis and attended Tech High School.

His parents separated when he was a young teenager, and he spent many summers with his Father in Alabama. It was there that he learned the skills of ironworking and blacksmithing. Blacksmithing was a skill that had been handed down from past generations of Love ancestors, who had been horsemen, turfmen, and horse breeders.

Richard joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1936 and was stationed at the base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for many months. He loved the Corps and re-enlisted on November 6, 1941, just one month before Pearl Harbor.

He met Evelyne Frances Wallace (10 Jan 1919 - 18 Mar 1991) in early 1941 and married her on November 23, 1941. Their early married life consisted of living on Marine bases at Quantico, VA, New River, NC, and Carlsbad, CA. Richard was a Master Technical Sargent who taught at Parris Island and other bases until he was sent overseas in January of 1945. There he (according to his Marine Corps records):

"Participated in the assault and capture of Iwo Jima, Volcanic Islands, as a member of the 5th Marine Division during the period of 19 February 1945 - 27 March 1945."

He also served in the Okinawa Campaign and returned stateside in August of 1945.

Richard developed severe symptoms of arthritis (which runs in the family) while serving as a Marine. The doctors said at the time that he had "every known form of arthritis in every joint in his body." He was given a medical discharge from the Marine Corps in 1946 and succumbed to a heart attack in 1957. He was 43 years old.

Richard and Evelyne had two children: Richard Enloe Love, III (23 Sep 1944 - 14 Dec 2008) and Carla Lee Love.
