George was the son of John and Mary Ann (Miller) Mason of Rockingham Co., Va. He was married first to Frances Rife and they had these children: Sarah Colby, John, Mary Goodwin, Martha Brown (predeceased him in 1896), Margaret Shafer and Ida Crosby. Frances died in 1874 and he married widow Johanna Timblin in 1879.

When he was 21, George went to Indiana to farm with his brothers William and Adam Mason. He met his wife Frances while in Indiana.

George was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted as a private in the 84th Indiana Inf. Co. G. and served through the end of the war.

After the war George and Frances settled in Iowa where he purchased an 80 acre farm in Sept. 1865. One of George's sisters, Mary Ann and her husband Henry Burkholder moved to the area in the 1870s and they are all buried in the Brethren Cemetery.
