Ferdinand was born on 2 March 1841 in Kol. Donnersruh, Kr Gostynin, Poland. His parents were Michael (1806-1876) and Anne Christine (Krueger) Kuehn (1802-1846). His siblings were Gottlieb, Julia and Samuel and he had several step-siblings. He married Wilhelmina Schultz or Shultz on 26 February 1847 in Plotzk, Poland. They had eleven children who lived and five who died in infancy. On 31 May 1903, Ferdinand and Wilhelmine and their younger children: Rudolph, Malida, Auguste and Amelia arrived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on the ship "Pomeranian". Their older children: Pauline, Gustav, Eduard, Karoline, Heinrich and Karl came to Canada with their spouse or on their own. From Montreal, they travelled by train to Winnipeg, Manitoba and then on to Watson, Saskatchewan. From Watson, they had a forty mile trip by horse and wagon to the area a few miles north of Esk, Saskatchewan where they homesteaded. In 1907, Ferdinand became ill and died on 20 or 24 June 1907 at his home on his farm north of Esk. His funeral was held in his home and he was buried in the Esk Lutheran Cemetery north of Esk.
