Professional Football Team Owner. He was the owner of the National Football League's Arizona Cardinals (formerly the Chicago Cardinals and the St. Louis Cardinals). He and his older brother Charles inherited the team following the death of their mother in 1962, who had moved the team to St. Louis, Missouri from Chicago, Illinois and in 1972 he purchased his older brother's share and became the sole owner. When the City of St. Louis refused to build him a new stadium, he relocated to Phoenix, Arizona prior to the start of the 1988 season. During his tenure, his teams experienced mild success, making the playoffs eight times with division wins in 2008, 2009, and 2015, with a Super Bowl XLIII appearance in which they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 27 to 23. At the time of his death at the age of 88, he was the longest tenured owner in the National Football League.
