Harry W. Hyman was born and reared in Elyria, Ohio. During his adult years, he was active in the community's civic life. His sudden death is a shock to all who knew him.
He was a practicing attorney with a number of business interests. We came to know him best through his association since 1941 with the Elyria Community Chest and later, the United Fund.
He served as president of the Community Chest, as general chairman of a Chest campaign and trustee for several years. When the United Fund of Greater Elyria was organized, he was named a member of the board of trustees. He was also a member of the board of the United Health Foundation.
During the years that he was active in the Community Chest and United Fund, he gave much time and effort to help organize and carry on campaigns to raise funds for Elyria's institutions. He played an outstanding part in several Chest campaigns to help reach the goals. He served on the boards of several of the beneficiaries of the Chest and United Fund. He was active in other organization dedicated to Elyria's social and civic progress.
Our paths crossed many times during the years when we worked together as members of committees in various campaigns. He devoted great energy to getting things done and had capacity as an organizer. He was liberal in his support of the things which he believed to be helpful to the community.
In his death, Elyria has lost a native son who took an active part in many activities as a matter of personal interest and obligation.
