Find A Grave Memorial of Charles Patrick Wood (Memorial ID: 186973078).

Private: Charles Patrick WOOD (AKA Teddy/Charley); Service No: QX13460

Son of Alice Josephine GORMAN and stepson of Robert William BISHOP.

Charles enlisted in the second Australian Imperial Force - Australian Army - WWII - on the 27th June 1940 at Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

The 2nd/26th Australian Infantry Battalion was formed at Grovely Camp, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Queensland on the 26th November 1940. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Harold 'Sapper' Boyes, a Duntroon graduate, was appointed Commanding Officer on the 1st November 1940.

The vast majority of the Officers, N.C.O s and other ranks were Queenslanders who had volunteered to serve in the second Australian Imperial Force. Many enlisted around the time of the Fall of France about 1940 and were, in many instances, men who had considered carefully before enlisting in the 2nd A.I.F. They were, to a big degree, different in nature to the young Australians who enlisted from "Day One" and soon after when the War started in September 1939.

After training at Redbank, Queensland from 29th January 1941, the Battalion moved to Bathurst Camp, New South Wales on the 24th February 1941 for Brigade training with their sister Battalions, the 2/30th from New South Wales and the 2/29th from Victoria. The 2/15th Field Artillery which completed the Brigade was also from New South Wales. The cold of Bathurst was a hell of a shock to the boys from sunny Queensland. Earlier in their training days, they were given the name 'The Gallopers', and the name stuck like glue.

Charles Patrick Wood, P.O.W. was one of (the sum of 3000 A.I.F personnel - POW'S) designated for "A" Force. A percentage of that number were A.I.F personnel from the 2/26 Australian Infantry Battalion chosen as part of "A" Force, which left Singapore in 1942. The majority of "A" Force were never to return to Singapore.

[The Australian War Memorial; General information about Australian prisoners of the Japanese].

He was assigned to a work party under Lt. Col. George Ramsay of 2/30, which was to be known as Ramsay Force, and slaved on the Mergui - Burma end of the Railway.

On completion of the railway, many members of "A" Force were kept in various POW Camps throughout Thailand, with a majority being sent to Bangkok from where they were selected to go to Japan to work in the mines.

The unmarked Japanese Transport Ship - Rakuyo Maru (also known in WW2 as, Hell & Death Ships, apart of a whole list of other ships that transported P.O.W's, with the use of the name "Maru" for all other Japanese Transport Ships too); [Sunken Japanese Ships with Allied POWs in Transit]. Rakuyo Maru also had on-board many P.O.W's - my Great Uncle Charles was one of the fellow prisoners of war on this ship. At 5.00am, early morning of the 12th September 1944 the Rakuyo Maru (apart of a convoy of ships) was torpedoed by a U.S. Submarine on its way to Japan, near and off the coast of Hainan Island in the South China Sea. Very few P.O.W's were rescued.

At the time of the disaster of the unmarked Japanese transport ship - "Rakuyo Maru", its sinking. Charles Patrick Wood his actual cause of death would have been from drowning; his QLD Death Certificate - states: Officially Presumed - At Sea (by echelon records); (AWM) Australian War Memorial - POW'S & Missing Persons - states: Missing presumed deceased; Roll of Honour - states: Died At Sea (Rakuyo Maru).

A great number of P.O.W's like Charles (mainly English & Australian) were unidentified after the disaster and sinking of the Rakuyo Maru. The P.O.W's that were rescued were very sick from (diseases and illnesses). Some of those rescued still passed away, from the extensively long period of malnutrition the P.O.W's endured & suffered through their time as Prisoners of War from the first point of capitulation in the "Fall of Singapore". There were many survivors that were rescued from the location of the disaster of the Rakuyo Maru. However those that had fallen, were remembered and commemorated officially by (CWGC) Commonwealth War Graves Commission - "In Honour Of" each Ex-Service Man & Woman and their country of origin.

Private: Charles Patrick Wood, QX13460, his Official Commemoration is with the (CWGC) Commonwealth War Graves Commission - a "Commemoration of Honour" is registered in the Labuan Memorial [Labuan War Cemetery] Labuan Federal Territory - Labuan, Malaysia.
