Larry L. Lawrence, 79, of Evansville passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. He was born July 4, 1940.

He graduated from Central High School (downtown) where he played on the basketball and baseball teams. After graduation, he went on to Evansville College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1967. He continued his education at the University of Evansville and earned a Master’s Degree in 1969. Larry taught in the EVSC for 28 years, 6 years at Fairlawn Elementary and 22 years at Central High School where he served as Chairperson of the Social Studies Department. At Central, he coached boy’s golf and freshman basketball. Larry retired in 1955. For 13 years, after retiring from Central, he coached men’s golf at the University of Evansville. He and his wife Sandy traveled all over the United States with the U of E Men’s Golf team, taking them to competition in such places as Florida, South Carolina, Kansas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio. Throughout his life, Larry was active in and served in leadership positions in many civic organizations-West Evansville Civitan Club, Central Turners, and the Evansville Country Club. Larry was also involved in Evansville politics for a number of years. He was elected to and served on the Vanderburgh County Council from 1980-1985. Larry’s favorite hobbies were fishing, golfing, and betting on thoroughbred horse races. Larry and Sandy, throughout their married life, had very special dogs they loved! Their first lab was “Babe”, followed by “Happy”, “Sadie”, “Lucky”, “Ruffy”, and “Max”. They were their “children” and dearly loved! In fact, even though Larry lived at Solarbron for 16 years, his dog “Bogie” was brought to see him quite often! When Larry could still drive, he and “Bogie” would get in the car, drive to McDonald’s for hamburgers, and spend the day “seeing the town!”

Larry was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Sandra Droll Lawrence. She passed away Sunday, July 10, 2011.

He is survived by his brother, Jerry Dale Lawrence.

A Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 4, 2019, at Alexander Memorial Park-Chapel of Remembrance, 2200 Mesker Park Drive, officiated by Pastor Gene Backes, with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit 3:30 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the cemetery chapel.
