Margaret was born in New York to Irish immigrants. Her parents were both born in County Clair, Ireland.

In 1870, when she was 11 years old, she was living with her family in Carrollton, Cattaraugus County, New York (the nearest post office was in Limestone, NY). The 1870 US Census lists:
James McMahon, 45, foreman on RR track, b. Ireland
Mary McMahon, 29, keeping house, b. Ireland
Margaret McMahon, 11, b. NY
Mary McMahon, 9, b. NY
Ann McMahon, 7, b. NY
Ellen McMahon, 4, b. NY
Catharine McMahon, 9 months (b. August), NY
James Malony, 45, no work listed, no relationship listed; b. Ireland

Margaret married Joseph McGuire. In 1900, they were living in West Omaha, Nebraska. Joseph was a grocer. Margaret sadly told the census taker that though she had given birth to 6 children, only 5 were still living. Their children were all born in Nebraska. In 1900, their children were: Helen G., 18, working as a clerk. Mattie was 16, and not attending school; the rest of the children were at school, and may have been taught by Martin I. Zeller, a live-in servant and teacher, who was born in Iowa. At school were: Mary U., 14; Thomas 13; Effie J. 16; John J.8, Ruth M. 7.

In 1930, she and her husband, Joseph, were living at 6303 Wirt Street in Omaha, Nebraska. The children were gone, and she and Joseph were both 70 years old.
