"The subject of this sketch, Joel Jelf, died at his home in Cartersburg, on the 29th day of October, 1875. He was born in Virginia in 1787, consequently was 88 years old. He moved to the state of Kentucky at an early day (date not known) and married in that state, and there were born three children, two girls and a boy, one of whom now survives him - James H. Jelf, a few years ago well known to many citizens of this county, but now a resident of Fremont County, Iowa. The deceased moved to this county about the year 1828, settled a short distance west of Danville, where he lived for many years. In 1844 he moved about three miles south of Clayton, thence to Belleville, and from there to Cartersburg, his last abiding place on earth.

"His remains were taken to the cemetery at old Salem Church, about three miles southeast of Belleville, for interment. As a neighbor he was generous and obliging; as a husband, good and faithful. He joined the Baptist Church when young, and lived a consistant member until the day of his death. Thus passed away one of the oldest pioneers in Hendricks County. L.A.H."
