Alan Glenn Darner, 72, of Lutz, Florida, passed away on September 22, 2019, at his residence. He was born on October 1, 1946, in Coshocton, Ohio.
He graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Master's degree in Education.
He was a retired teacher and boys basketball coach. His career began in Ohio at Kent State High School as the JV coach. He then went on to be the head coach at Malvern High School, Steubenville Catholic Central, Medina High School and Tiffin Columbian High School. His love of basketball brought him to Indiana, where he continued his career at Anderson Highland High School. He concluded his coaching tenure at Indianapolis Pike High School, where his team won two state championships in 1998 and 2001. His teams won the Hall of Fame Classic in 1991 (Anderson Highland) and 2001 (Pike). He was the IBCA Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1998. His 1997-1998 Pike team won the Tournament of Champions.
He was a member of the Indiana and Ohio High School Coaches' Associations.
He enjoyed working out, playing tennis, spending time with his grandchildren and watching their sporting events.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Diane (Stahl) Darner; children, Amy (Skip) Watkins, Kim (Mike) McDermott, Linc (Kristen) Darner, Tige (Tera) Darner; grandchildren, Hunter Watkins, Tanner Watkins, Sean (fiancee, Kennedy Aiman) McDermott, Chayce McDermott, Layne Darner, Tate Darner, Madie Darner, Alex Darner and Kaitlyn Darner; sisters, Arlene (Terry) Reddick and Anne (Gary) Simmons; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Glenn and Marchie Elizabeth Darner.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2019, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson.
Services will be Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
