BENJAMIN ALLEN
March 2, 1948 ~ April 7, 2019 (Age 71)

Benjamin Allen was granted his wings on the afternoon of Sunday, April 7, 2019, in Riverside Institute of Virginia, in Newport News, surrounded by his loving family. His life began on March 2, 1948, son of the late Edward and Maggie Allen.

On November 22, 1986, he was joined in Holy Matrimony with Rosemary J. Allen. They were blessed to have four children. Ben was a loving and dedicated husband, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family unconditionally. He attended Phenix High School in Hampton, graduating with the Class of 1967. At an early age, he accepted Christ, was baptized, and joined Riverside Baptist Church, Hampton. A few years ago, he began attending church services at Faith Fellowship Church, Williamsburg.

Ben was a firefighter for the Newport News Fire Department for twenty-five years. He loved this job and retired in 2003. He was also employed for over thirty years with Whiting’s Funeral Home, and most recently, for about 5 years, he worked for the Pastor’s Doves, releasing doves for funerals and other occasions. He also was a chartered Bus Driver, working for Newton Bus Service. In his spare time, you would find him doing carpentry work, remodeling, and repairing homes with his brother-in-law, “Noonie”. He loved shopping in Sam’s Club, Home Depot and Lowes. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him, but he left with us a legacy of wisdom and love.

He leaves cherished memories with his wife, Rosemary Allen; children, Terry “Mister” Jones, Lawrence “Skinny” Jones, Connie Butler (Tyrone), Horace “Zack” Jones, Jr.; five grandchildren, Bronson, Alexis, Tynika, Lateshia and Breon; special friends/grandchildren, Jaterria Brickhouse and Jeff Mercer; great-grandchildren, Ayden Erskines, who was very special to him; Alonia, Eliza and A’Sha Nicole; two sisters, Maggie Caples and Virgie Williams; a brother, Edward Allen, Jr. (Natalie); three aunts, Wyoma Oliver, Gloria Tyler and Vivian Morgan; a special aunt, Shirley Palmer (George); nieces, Chandra, Stephanie and Renita; nephews, Weymouth Williams (Melissa), Jene Williams (Onika) and Edward Williams (Audrey); brothers-in-law, George Piggott (Marilyn), Ernest James (Glendora) and Edward Piggott, Jr. (Barbara); eleven great-nephews and five great-nieces. He also leaves numerous cousins, other relatives and many caring friends.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2019, in Zion Baptist Church. The Fireman's Final Ride for Ben will begin at 11:00 a.m. departing from Whiting's Funeral Home, with viewing in the church beginning at noon until the hour of his service.
