Modestus P. “Desty” Sherry, 94, R.D. Ebensburg, died October 22, 2018 at home. Born March 4, 1924 in R.D. Gallitzin, son of the late Pius and Anna (Beiswenger) Sherry.

Preceded in death by son, Duane, daughter, Diane Griffith, infant sister, Stella, and these brothers and sisters, Helen Weakland, Leo, Joseph, Zita Boley, Thomas, Cora Packard, Oscar, Alma Miller, Eleanor Biter and Rita Adams.

Survived by wife of 69 years, the former June Sheehan whom he married June 17, 1949 in Baltimore Maryland., children: Carol (Joe) Hines, Martin (Susan Hartwig), Eileen (Ronald) Itell, Lynne (Lawrence) Natcher, and Boyd (Michelle Villa) all of R.D. Ebensburg. Daughter in law, Barbara (Shrift) Sherry and son in law, John “Scott” Griffith (Cindy), both of R.D. Ebensburg, 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, with 2 to be born in November and a great great granddaughter.

Desty was the last member of his immediate family. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful little dog, Tippy. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, hunting and he was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He worked as a carpenter for 8 years, sold seed to farmers in this area for over 30 years, and was a dairy farmer for over 68 years. Desty was a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, Atlantic Breeders Association, he served as president of the DHIA, (Dairy Heard Improvement Association), and also served on the board of FHA (Farm Home Administration) for 6 years.

Member of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto, where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, Very Rev. John D. Byrnes, Celebrant. Committal, St. Michael Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 PM Thursday at the Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, PA 16613, where a Vigil Service will be held Thursday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made St. Michael’s School, Loretto, in Desty’s memory. www.gibbonsfhashvillecoalport.com
