Obituary, June 22-23 2013, "The Houston Chronicle" (Houston, Harris Co., TX)

Milton Lawrence Brand of Houston, Texas, a beloved father and friend, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013.

Milton was born May 1, 1919, in Haskins, Ohio, and grew up on his family's farm where he learned to work hard, study hard, and play just hard enough to earn the nickname "the pill". He attended Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio and, in 1941, earned a bachelor degree in business administration.

On December 8, 1941 - the day following the attack on Pearl Harbor - Milton enlisted in the Army Air Force where he spent the next four years as a weather forecaster in the European theater. Upon his return to the states, he married his college sweetheart, Elizabeth Anne Rhorbacker, and began his studies at the University of Michigan Law School where he earned his JD in 1948.

The ensuing years found him rising through the ranks as he began his career as an attorney landman working for oil and gas companies and eventually for himself, as president of Brand Resources, Inc. He also authored a section of "The Landman's Guide" and several other published articles relating to land practices.

Milton was active in the American Association of Petroleum Landmen where he served as Director and on various committees, including ethics and forms. He also served as Vice President and President of the Houston Association of Petroleum Landmen and was an Honorary Life Member of the HAPL.

Along the way, Milton fathered three children and was the best husband, Dad, and role model a family could hope for. He was a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church for 57 years and contributed much time and effort to supporting his family's many activities. His own favorite activities included sailing and fishing on Galveston Bay.
Following Elizabeth's death in 1978, Milton married Alma "Bunty" Harvey in 1979 and enjoyed many wonderful trips to Australia, Bunty's homeland.

He leaves behind son Jim Brand and his wife Margaret, daughters Karla Lowerre and her husband Bill, Peggy Perry and her husband Jim, Bunty's daughters Linden Reid and her husband Jim, Anabel Woodmansee and her husband Woody, Jane Harris and her husband Charlie, 12 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Chapelwood UMC, 11140 Greenbay, Houston 77024, on Wednesday, June 26, at 1:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Milton's name to either the HAPL, 800 Bering Dr., Ste. 120, Houston 77057 (with a notation that the gift is for the "E. Brand Teacher Fund") or to the Chapelwood Foundation, c/o Chapelwood UMC, 11140 Greenbay, Houston (77024).
