A crab trap that fell off a vehicle on Interstate 4 caused a "horrific" collision that claimed the lives of two Lakeland children and seriously injured their father, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Larry Burbank, 47, was in guarded condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center on Saturday night, according to family friend Van Garner, who is the youth pastor at Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene to which the family belongs. Burbank's 15-year-old son, Alex, and 11-year-old daughter, Carly, died, according to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Larry Coggins Jr. The accident happened at 1:10 p.m. on I-4 in the eastbound lane, about a mile west of State Road 33, Coggins said. Kissimmee resident Deborah Whitley, 54, was driving her 2001 Camry in the inside lane when she swerved into the center lane to avoid a crab trap that was in the road in front of her. When she swerved, she hit the 2004 Ford Expedition driven by Larry Burbank, sending the Expedition spinning counterclockwise, Coggins said. The Expedition rolled over several times and ended up in the grassy median. Burbank's wife, Jean, 45, and their 14-year-old son, Troy, received minor injuries. Their son Alex, 15, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died at the scene, Coggins said. Their daughter Carly, 11, was wearing a seat belt but died at the scene after suffering severe head injuries, according to Coggins. The eastbound lanes of I-4 were closed in the area of Socrum Loop Road for about an hour and a half, Coggins said.
